(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Street vendors in Little Village report feeling much safer in recent months, according to a Chicago alderman, who partly credits police and the Johnson administration for the turnaround.
Little Village street vendors demanded more protection from the city and police amid violent early-morning armed robberies that were taking place on an almost daily basis late last year and into January of 2023.
Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez (25th) says vendors are reporting an overall improvement to their safety.
“We still see some isolated incidents. Not with the frequency and the violence that we’ve seen in the past,” he told WBBM Newsradio on Monday.
He says the community, the police and Mayor Johnson’s office have worked well together. Sigcho-Lopez adds that some vendors are still wary of communication with city departments or law enforcement when bad things do happen because of licensing issues.
Many municipalities, including New York, have ordinances that allow for vending fare to be sold on the street, the alderman said.
