CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Just steps from the Jarvis Red Line Stop sits an antique shop called Lakeside Treasures.

Inside, you'll find all sorts of treasures from years gone by, from handmade furniture to one of kind knickknacks and, at the center of the store, its greatest treasure, owner Betty McDaniel.

The store is her childhood dream come true.

“I’ve always loved antiques. As a child, I loved old furniture,” McDaniel said.

For 20 years, the retired social worker has scouted the perfect pieces for her store.

“I just go out and buy items I like and hope that a few people will come in and like the items that I chose and when I buy items from a home. I love the stories that people give me behind the items,” McDaniel said.

And, she loves sharing those stories with her customers, many of whom, like Janet Dees, quickly become friends.

“She’s just a wonderful person, but she also creates this wonderful community around her. I think this is a cornerstone of the neighborhood and particularly this Jarvis Square area of Rogers Park,” Dees said.

Betty treasures the friendships she's made as much as she treasures being able to live her dream.

“I feel so blessed, I cannot believe it sometime. I really have to pinch myself. Twenty years, and I still love doing this.
