CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Cunneen's, a bar that’s been on the corner of West Devon and North Newgard Avenues in Rogers Park for 50 years, was broken into Saturday morning for the second time in exactly one month.
No one was injured, but the burglar smashed through the glass on the front doors.
The bar's owner, Belinda Cunneen, told WBBM she thinks an increase in drug use and poor treatment of mental illnesses has contributed to rising crime in Chicago.
"You'd have to be pretty desperate to break in,” Cunneen said. “This was at 8 o'clock in the morning. There were lots of people out already; there was traffic out, and they still broke through on a main, busy road.
"It's like the same M.O. [as the most recent robbery]: just damaging the doors, coming in and just getting minimal liquor. Not a significant theft, it's just the damage and the headaches that go with it," Cunneen said.
Cunneen's has boards up over the doors but remains open for business. In a Facebook post, the bar reminded its followers that it’s still open for business as usual.
“Please do not be deterred by the boarded-up doors,” reads a post on the bar’s Facebook page. “Unfortunately, we had a break-in [Saturday] morning while the bar was closed and luckily the broken glass doors were the extent of the physical damage.”
Following the break-in, Ald. Maria Hadden (49th) stopped by the bar and posted to her Facebook page to call on the Rogers Park community to support Cunneen’s.
