CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Temperatures are expected to be warmer than usual on Sunday for the annual Chicago marathon. The 35,000 runners participating in the event should be mindful of intense heat this year as temperatures are expected to peak at 81 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
Dr. Trevor Lewis, Medical Director of Emergency Medicine at Cook County Health emphasizes the importance of hydration for those running on Sunday.
“You maybe want to go back and forth between water and an electrolyte drink. Gatorade I think is what they have available, and just making sure that you’re careful in the beginning," he said. "Don’t skip those (hydration) stations."
The signs of heat exhaustion and dehydration are dizziness, nausea, and feeling clammy. Lewi advised that runners experiencing these symptoms should slow down and definitely drink some water or Gatorade.
There are hydration stations every 1.5 mile and medical tents for runners feeling unwell throughout the 26-mile long course of the marathon.
