(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Several people were displaced after an apartment fire early Friday in northwest suburban Arlington Heights, and police took an 80-year-old person of interest into custody as they considered arson as a cause.

Firefighters arrived at the four-story apartment complex at 400 W. Rand Road around 12:30 a.m. and saw flames and billowing smoke pouring out of one section, authorities said in a news release. The fire appeared to have started in a first-floor unit.

The nearly 100-unit building was evacuated as fire departments from the region attacked the blaze. About one third of the residents were left homeless, amid frigid conditions, because of the damage, officials said. The Red Cross helped people find lodging.

While on scene, Arlington Heights police arrested a person of interest, an 80-year-old man, after he made statements about the incident. Further details were not available.

No injuries were reported.
