(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – One of Chicago's oldest movie theaters is going old-school in hopes of drumming up business.
It's an attempt to draw moviegoers to the New 400 Theaters on North Sheridan, a cinema dating back to the early 20th century that has struggled since the pandemic and might have to close.
The silent classics “Nosferatu” and “The Phantom of The Opera” will be shown the next two Mondays. The movies will be accompanied by organ music, just like a century ago.
“There’s an exceptional power in the silent film,” says Jay Warren, co-founder of the Silent Film Society of Chicago.
He says so far, there has been a strong response to the special showings.
