CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- As Chicago braces for a foot of snow by Tuesday, some areas have already recorded several inches prompting Chicago Public School to cancel in-person classes.
Six inches of snow were recorded at Midway International airport by 6 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Five inches of snow were recorded in the West Ridge neighborhood.
But other areas have seen much less. O’Hare Airport recorded 2.4 inches of snow by 6 p.m., while southwest suburban Palos Park only had 1 inch.
Farther south, suburban Dolton recorded 4 inches of snow by noon, according to the weather service.
Monday evening, CPS announced that Tuesday’s in-person classes for pre-kindergarten and special education cluster students were canceled due to travel concerns from the significant snowfall.
City Colleges of Chicago also canceled in-person classes for Tuesday. The City Colleges’ COVID-19 vaccination sites will remain open and all essential employees are still required to report to work.
The Circuit Court of Cook County has taken steps to limit the number of people traveling to and from the court, according to a statement from the chief judge’s office.
All court proceedings Tuesday will be conducted over video conference or teleconference. No in-person hearings will be held, so litigants should not come to court facilities.
With the exception of bond court, the Sixth Municipal District in Markham will hear no criminal proceedings, either in person or by videoconference or teleconference, and hearings will be rescheduled for a future date.
The snow has already hampered air travel. Airlines at O’Hare canceled 222 flights, while Midway had 151 canceled flights, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation.
Chicago sent out hundreds of snowplows earlier Monday to respond to the winter storm moving across the area.
Nearly 300 salt spreaders will focus on arterial routes and Lake Shore Drive before transitioning to residential streets as needed.
