CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Chicago Transit Authority announced Thursday a new agreement made with the Chicago Police Department.
With the goal of making public transportation safer for customers and employees, an ongoing agreement between the CTA and CPD has now been extended three more years, with an added incentive for off-duty officers who volunteer to patrol CTA properties.
In a statement, the CTA said that the volunteer CPD officers will now be paid time and half when patrolling with the Voluntary Special Employment Program (VSEP).
VSEP officers are a complement to plans already announced by the police department to assign additional officers to CTA trains and platforms the CTA’s own teams of unarmed guards.
“The extension and enhancement of this invaluable program for volunteer officers to patrol the CTA is the latest in a series of steps taken by both CTA and CPD in recent months to provide everyone with a safer transit riding experience,” said CTA President Dorval R. Carter, Jr.
