CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot seems to have brightened her outlook on Chicago Bears fans returning to Soldier Field, if only slightly.
Last month, Lightfoot suggested the chances were less than 50% that Bears fans would be back in the stands this pandemic-plagued season. She said then team owners hadn’t presented a realistic plan to host hundreds of fans safely.
At an unrelated news conference Tuesday, NBC Chicago reporter Mary Ann Ahern pressed the mayor to give an update.
“Like any other Bears fan, of course I would like to be there. We’re having conversations with the Bears, and we’ll see where they lead.”
Ahern suggested that sounded like “maybe.”
“We’ll see,” Lightfoot said.
And then the clock ran out on reporters.
The Bears had announced in August this season would be fan-free.
“After discussing a draft plan with City health officials, the Bears and the City of Chicago agreed the health metrics show that it is not the right time to welcome fans back to Soldier Field. The health and safety of the city’s residents and fans of the Bears will always take priority. The team and City will continue to monitor the environment and believe there can be a sound plan in place to bring fans back to Soldier Field once it is deemed safe and appropriate. Until then, Bears home games will not include in-person fans.”
