ILLINOIS (WBBM NEWSRADIO) --Illinois has set new records for marijuana sales while some Indiana lawmakers pushing for legalization in their state say it's past time to make it happen.
Illinois made $1.38 billion in sales and that’s just recreational-more than double the sales during the first year of legalization.
Last month also set a new record- $138 million, beating the previous record by $10 million.
It’s no secret that a lot of Indiana residents cross the border to visit dispensaries and some lawmakers there think it's past time for their state to legalize marijuana as well.
Governor Eric Holcomb has said he’s open to limited research.
"I am not opposed to researching Marijuana for the potential and possible positive medicinal uses," he told WANE-TV in Fort Wayne in December.
More Republicans have indicated they’re open to legalization and Indiana Senate Democratic Leader Greg Taylor said polls show that 80 percent of Indiana residents are in support.
"Common-sense legalization would bring in new revenue streams for the state and create jobs for farmers and small businesses," he told the Indianapolis Star.
"It would also mean incalculable relief for thousands of veterans and chronically ill Hoosiers who would benefit from medical cannabis."
