(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Nearly 200 people running the Chicago Marathon this Sunday are raising money — and awareness — for suicide prevention.

Steve Moore and other members of the Race for Hope team will be wearing shirts with the faces of loved ones who died by suicide as they run past an estimated 1.7 million marathon spectators.

Moore’s son Paul died by suicide in 2006 at age 19. Moore says the race team keeps growing, thanks to more discussion of suicide and to marathon organizers giving them charity spots.

The team has raised $405,000 so far for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The organization funds research into suicide, prevention and public policy advocacy work.
