Someone shot at a CTA bus hours after drivers protested downtown over safety concerns

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Someone shot at a CTA bus Saturday night, hours after drivers protested in the streets of downtown over safety concerns.

The bus was headed back to a CTA garage and the driver was the only person on board. State police said someone shot at it on Interstate 57 between 111th and 115th streets at around 10:30pm.  This followed a protest where drivers marched from City Hall to Millennium Park.

“We are tired of being attacked on the bus. We are tired of CTA not listening to us,” one CTA bus driver said.

Their union, Amalgamated Transit Local 241, has recorded 400 physical or verbal assaults against drivers  including one last weekend.

“We’re getting ready to shut down the street. Next we’re going to shut down the city,” another CTA bus driver said.

A CTA spokesman said safety and security of their employees are the top priority and the agency plans to add more unarmed security guards.
