White Sox 'Cane Guy' explains the magic that occurred in Game 3, will return for Game 4 of ALDS

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Move over Patrick Kane. Chicago’s favorite cane is currently one that was wielded by a White Sox fan during the team’s come from behind win Sunday.

When the Chicago White Sox resume their American League Division Series on Tuesday afternoon, they’ll have a powerful fan in the stands cheering for them once again: the "Cane Guy."

He’s become a bit of a celebrity, the "Cane Guy" – who cast a spell during Sunday night’s game and over fans on TV. Rob Holt, of Northbrook, gets some of the credit for helping the Sox out of a slump during Sunday’s Game 3 by pointing his cane at struggling batters from his seat behind the Astros' dugout; which "magically" led to the players getting just the hits the team needed.

He told our sister station 670 The Score how he became known as "Gandalf."

"So I lifted my cane and I pointed to Leury [Garcia] and I said 'hit the ball to left field' and he hit the ball to left field. Then, another guy came up and I said 'hit to the gap' and he hit to the gap, and the guy in back of me said 'oh man, the cane is magic.' And my son sitting next to me said 'no, it's not the cane, it's him,'" Holt said.

"All the guys around me said we need insurance. We've got to have insurance, so I said 'alright, fine. There's just enough juice for one more.' So I pointed to Vaughn and I said 'drill it to the outfield. You have the power.' And then bang there he goes with the first pitch."

The 71-year old has been using the cane to get around since hurting his leg playing with his grandson recently. And while the lifelong Sox fan doesn’t take himself too seriously and credits the win to the incredible energy at Guaranteed Rate Field, saying there was a buzz in the stands that he hasn’t felt there before; he said he will still bring it to Game 4 and hopes it still has something left in it.
