CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Dozens of athletes competed Thursday in the Special Olympics kickball championships in Humboldt Park.

The championship took place at Little Cubs Field on the 1400 block of North Humboldt Boulevard, where over 500 Special Olympics Chicago/Special Children's Charities athletes assembled to cheer on the remaining four teams in the Chicago Park District Summer Day Camp Kickball League Championship.

“This is the end of the year summer kickball intramural league, so we do this for six weeks, and this is the championship,” said Blair Ade, with the Chicago Park District.

Teams from the league’s minor and major leagues battled it out for a gorgeous gold trophy — with a red kickball sitting inside for the champs. Ade said Little Cubs Field was the perfect setting for the showdown.

“This is a little hidden gem,” Ade said. “Not everyone knows that this is here, so it’s fun to pack the house. Definitely sold out here tonight. To have the opportunity, with this being on Park District grounds … it is really awesome just to see everyone come out and have a really good time.”

Chevette White, one of the coaches for the Columbus Park Chargers, said the players practice Monday through Friday and are “passionate about what they do.”

One of White’s players, Sydney Jones, said she was thrilled to be in the tournament.

“I just love this medal,” Jones said. “This really represents for people like me, and I love that.”
