Spots go fast for Elgin District U-46's Summer Connection programs

ELGIN (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- After what young people have gone through during the pandemic, missing out on being with their friends, it’s no wonder spots went fast for summer activity sign-ups in the Elgin District U-46 school district.

By the time registration ended last Friday for the district's Summer Connection programs, officials said more than 6,200 elementary school students had signed up for learning activities this summer with the Boys and Girls Club, the Boy Scouts, Side Streets Studio Art, the Streamwood Parks and Recreation Department, the Elgin Parks, and more.

"Research says that the brain actually develops best when it’s learning socially, and so, having these engagements in a summer school program where kids want to go, is to me, the best of all worlds," said School District U-46 Supt. Tony Sanders.

Supt. Sanders said many other students will be getting additional math and reading help in schools this summer.

Despite how different life has been for young people during the pandemic, Supt. Sanders believes they’ve learned a lot about themselves, even if lessons learned were not what would typically be taught.
