(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A northwest suburban cultural center is giving people a chance to participate in a streaming TV sensation.
The Wheeling-based Korean Cultural Center of Chicago is offering a day of "Squid Games" celebrating the Netflix TV show that has turned into a worldwide phenomenon.
On the show, people play childhood games for a large cash prize. Those who lose are killed.
Kay Rho, executive director of the Korean Cultural Center, said the stakes in this weekend's Squid Games are a little lower. Everyone will walk out with their life and a prize.
Korean culture is enjoying a worldwide moment, Rho notes. Besides the TV show, the K-Pop band BTS is one of the biggest musical acts on the planet, and Parasite won the Oscar for Best Picture.
"This is the right time to promote Korean Culture and share and celebrate. We like to share our experience and our culture with people," Rho said.
The cultural center said the local version of “Squid Games” involves 120 preregistered participants who will be divided into six groups of 20 to play a total of six games.
Korean snacks will be presented as prizes to winners of each game, as well as the overall winner.
Tickets are sold out.
