(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — With the help of a non-profit group founded by the rapper Common, a music program has been launched for inmates at the Stateville Correctional Center in southwest suburban Crest Hill.
Common's foundation, Imagine Justice, helped pay for a production studio at the state prison with computer equipment, a mixing board and instruments.
Common, a Chicago native, said the program will help inmates gain skills they can use once they leave prison, as well as give them a sense of hope while they are behind bars.
He said the program is “one of the steps towards making sure that our people that are incarcerated come back home better.”
Nine inmates at Stateville will take part in the first 12-week music class.
