Former Rolling Meadows student recounts time district officials thanked him after he rickrolled 6 high schools as part of senior prank

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Administrators at a suburban high school thanked a student for pulling off a unique senior prank last spring.

Rolling Meadows high school student Minh Duong said he discovered a vulnerability in the District 214 network that allowed him to take control of any screen connected to it.

On April 30, every TV, smart board and display menu played Rick Astley’s 1987 hit “Never Gonna Give You Up.”

The practice is called rickrolling and it happens when the Astley song is unleashed on an unsuspecting user.

Duong detailed how he rickrolled all 11,000 students across all six high schools in a piece on his personal blog.

In a video of the incident posted on YouTube, you could see one teacher trying to turn off the projector that played the music video.

He admitted that the hack was illegal and that he could have faced criminal prosecution.  Instead, he said district officials thanked him for finding the vulnerability.

Duong graduated last spring and is now a student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
