NAPERVILLE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A west suburban food pantry is having a weeklong event to try to make sure everyone has a chance to share the holidays with a nice meal.
In a couple of hours Friday morning, the Rotary Club of Naperville Sunrise collected 400 pounds of food and several carloads of toys for the West Suburban Community Pantry, as part of the pantry’s "Harvest Week," according to development director Lisa Spaeth.
Food and toy donations can be made at several locations through next Thursday.
"With the grocery prices, food prices rising...we’re getting through the pandemic, but we’re still seeing the need very high,” Spaeth said.
Spaeth said one in three people who need help with food is reluctant to seek that help. She said the pantry did help 68,000 people just last year alone.
“We’re just trying to get people to come forward and help them take that one piece of stress off of their plate, so that they can do other things like provide warm clothes for their children or pay the heating bill," she said.
The pantry is also collecting toys, especially ones for 8- to 12-year-old boys. Spaeth said those toys are "needed the most."
Spaeth said that for those who need the convenience, the West Suburban Community Pantry even has a way to order groceries online at virtualfoodpantry.net.
“They can order groceries online, just like you do for Amazon Fresh or Jewel, and then come to either the pantry in Woodridge or a few other locations in Bolingbrook or Romeoville and pick up their groceries," she said.
