(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago Public Schools officials say this week’s heat wave should not be a problem because all school buildings in the system have working air-conditioning.
But that’s not the case in School District 58 in the western suburbs.
Administrators in the Downers Grove-based school district confirmed Monday that the first day of classes will be pushed back from Wednesday to Friday because of the expected high temperatures.
“Unfortunately, our classrooms and most areas of our schools are not equipped with air conditioning nor modern HVAC systems, which can cause significant issues for individuals in extreme weather,” District 58 Supt. Kevin Russell said in an online message to families. “By postponing the start of school by two days, we aim to provide a more favorable environment for effective teaching and learning.”
District 58 has nearly 5,000 preschool through eighth grade students and more than 600 full-time and part-time employees.
Meantime, school officials in LaGrange District 105 are considering half-days of instruction on Wednesday and Thursday. They are set to make that decision by Tuesday afternoon.
