CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago’s first new class of police recruits since the pandemic and the death of George Floyd received an eye-opening speech Tuesday from their superintendent this morning.

David Brown told the classroom of 40 recruits at the academy, “There’s likely some cops in this department – and other departments across the country – that we never should’ve hired.”

The superintendent explained others may “lose their way” after years on the force seeing people at their worst.

It’s up to the recruits, Brown said, to use their sense of right and wrong when they encounter those officers on the job.

He explained how a culture of protection exists in many departments where good officers don’t report bad ones because they may have saved one another’s lives.

Never before have police had to deal with so much at once, Brown said in lauding the recruits for choosing to become officers.
