(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — After a weekend that saw some four dozen people shot in Chicago, including two police officers, Police Supt. David Brown on Monday discussed his strategy to tamp down further violence.

Brown said he’s concerned that after a year of being shut indoors, more people will be partying and gathering outdoors, leading to shootings.

“What we want to do is proceed with an all-hands-on-deck (approach) during the peak hours,” he said.

“Think about the last global pandemic we had in this country,” Brown added, referring to the 1918 flu. “What followed was the Roaring Twenties.”

He’s making changes, confirming that nine police commanders in crime-prone districts have had their hours moved from a typical 9-to-5 shifts to a 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. slot.

There may also be changes in the way patrols are handled, he said.

Police are also working with other city departments to give young people alternatives and assistance this summer, he said.
