(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago’s Inspector General says the process of disciplining police officers accused of misconduct may not always be fair.

The IG’s office says it found that the Chicago Police Bureau of Internal Affairs, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability and the Chicago Police Board do not have clear guidance to ensure fairness in deciding discipline for officers.

The current process “unpredictable” and “risks arbitrary outcomes,” according to officials in a new report.

One recommendation is that the separate bodies consult with each other.

The Inspector General says the Police Board balked at that, preferring to be independent.

The police department and COPA have indicated they’ve already revised some policies.
