(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The teenager who was repeatedly punched during a violent arrest in Oak Lawn has been released from juvenile detention following a court hearing Tuesday morning.
Hadi Abuatelah, 17, was taken into Oak Lawn police custody and held at the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center after being released from the hospital Monday.
In a statement, the Arab American Action Network (AAAN) said Abuatelah is now in the custody of his parents.
He was arrested last week after running away from police during a traffic stop. A bystander's video showed officers repeatedly punching the teen during the arrest.
Oak Lawn police said the teen was trying to reach for a gun in a bag.
The AAAN said it’s pushing Cook County prosecutors to charge the officers who continued to strike Abuatelah while they had him pinned on the ground.
