Temporary DMV opens at Prairie State College with Chicago Heights location under repair

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Illinois Secretary of State driver’s license facility in Chicago Heights is still shut down nearly a year after rioting caused severe damage to it. Now, there is a temporary alternative.

The Illinois Secretary of State plans to open a temporary driver’s services facility at Prairie State College in Chicago Heights. The facility will be open Tuesdays through Saturdays starting May 11.

The permanent facility on 209th Street in Chicago Heights is still under repair.

"We don’t know when the older building that was so damaged will be ready to go. We’re going to be with this facility functioning at least until then," Secretary of State spokesman Dave Drucker told CBS 2.

"We’re as frustrated as anybody in terms of the damage that was done at that facility June 1 of that year and the delay that it’s caused."

One Richton Park man likes the convenience of the temporary facility. He said otherwise he would drive to the extremely busy Secretary of State facility on 99th and King Drive in the city to take care of business.
