Tinley Park carnival cut short due to unruly teens the previous day

TINLEY PARK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Police in Tinley Park said they were forced to cancel the final day of a carnival over the weekend after hundreds of young people swarmed the event in response to a social media invitation.

The Armed Forces Weekend Carnival was being held in the parking lot of the 80th Avenue Metra Station in Tinley Park. The Village said that on Saturday night a flash mob of teenagers converged on the carnival starting fights and causing mayhem.

Tinley Park police said the teenagers were responding to posts on social media to gather there.

Taniyla Smith and her family showed up Sunday, only to find out the carnival was canceled because of what happened Saturday.

“I feel very bad because I really wanted to go to the carnival, and they passed out tickets to my whole school,” she told CBS-2.

Tinley Park police said most of the teenagers were released to their parents. Citations were issued to five teens for fighting.

One police officer was slightly injured while breaking up a fight.
