CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The family of Adam Toledo, the 13-year-old shot to death by a Chicago police officer, announced Wednesday a new non-profit.

Adam’s Place is described as a rural sanctuary for at-risk kids; a place where 10- to 14-year olds boys will live with caring house parents, attend local schools, and learn values and practical skills by participating in the daily activities on a farm.

A statement from the Toledo Family posted on the just-launched Adam’s Place website reads, “This is what Adam would want: a place with animals, a place to make friends, a place to feel safe.”

Their mission is to help vulnerable youth develop skills, values, and self-worth by learning to care for animals and the land, other people, and themselves, so that they may become productive young men in a challenging world.

Adam's Place will work closely with families, schools, religious organizations, and social services to identify at-risk youths who can benefit from the program.

On the Adam's Place website, it reads, "Adam Toledo was a sweet, loving boy who adored animals and liked to draw and play with Legos. He was growing up, finding his way, and testing the boundaries, as so many adolescents do.

"Adam was a good kid, but despite our best efforts, he snuck out at night, lured by older youths who did not have his well-being in mind."

The Toledo Family said they have "dedicated ourselves to helping other families ensure that their sons have the chance to fulfill their dreams. We envision Adam's Place as a way for families to remove their sons from potentially violent and dangerous situations in their neighborhoods so that they can learn and grow in a safe environment."

They are currently accepting donations to help fund the non-profit.

Toledo’s mother, Elizabeth "Betty" Toledo, said in a statement, “The needs are great, but the hearts here are big.”

Wednesday would be Adam Toledo’s 14th birthday.
