(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- About 1.6 million travelers are expected at O'Hare and Midway airports from Thursday through Tuesday for the long Labor Day weekend. An air travel expert said some of those people could be spending a lot of time waiting.
The Chicago Department of Aviation predicts the number of people traveling through Midway will be up nearly 50 percent from last year, while the number at O'Hare is predicted to be about 7 percent higher.
Joe Schwieterman is a transportation professor at DePaul University, who said that means you could spend more time in lines to check bags or go through security.
He said there's also been a problem recently with flights that could slow down holiday weekend travel for some.
"Checking your flight before you leave for the airport is a good idea. If it's late, you can maybe buy some time while still at home."
