(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Lake County Sheriff's Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said it was almost one year ago when detectives were contacted by a 91-year-old man who said he knew he had paid his bills — but he kept getting late notices.
Covelli said the man would put his outgoing mail in his mailbox.
It’s a practice that used to be more common: Leaving outgoing mail in your mailbox for the postal carrier to pick up, but Covelli said that’s how the man ended up a victim in a forgery and theft scheme.
"They drove by. They were checking mailboxes,” he said. “They found several envelopes containing outgoing mail in the 91-year-old's mailbox, and they took those envelopes, opened them and stole the checks from inside the envelopes."
Months later, Covell said the investigation pointed to three people: 32-year-old Elizabeth Tiskevich, 27-year-old Jessica Garlock, and 40-year-old David Kaminski. All three are wanted for forgery.
"They determined that these three stole the checks from the mailbox, altered the checks chemically to change the names and monetary amounts written on the checks, and then cashed them to receive cash money — essentially, stealing from this 91-year-old man," the deputy chief said.
Covelli said the three stole thousands of dollars from the man. Arrest warrants have been issued for each of them.
