CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- People who are returning to work downtown will have to do without two North Side CTA stations.
Two stations on the north branch of the CTA Red Line closed Sunday and will remain closed for the next three years.
The Lawrence station in Uptown and the Berwyn station in Edgewater will be demolished and completely rebuilt as part of the CTA’s Red and Purple Line Modernization Project.
The CTA said both of those stations are over 100-years old and when they are rebuilt they will be fully accessible to people with disabilities. The new stations will feature elevators and wider platforms.
The work is expected to finish in 2024.
Red and Purple Line service will continue throughout construction, with train service running on two tracks (the westernmost tracks) while CTA rebuilds the two easternmost tracks (normally the northbound tracks). Red and Purple Line trains will share a track in both directions. Customers should allow extra travel time.
There will be temporary stations in place at Argyle in Uptown and Bryn Mawr in Edgewater, but those two stations will also be rebuilt.
During construction, two bus routes, the #81 Lawrence and the #92 Foster, will be rerouted to provide customers with convenient bus-rail transfers:
• The #81 Lawrence will be rerouted to the Wilson Red and Purple Line transfer station.
• The #92 Foster will be rerouted to the Bryn Mawr temporary Red Line station.
