CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A University of Chicago student was killed Saturday in Hyde Park in what police say was a shooting spree carried out by a man later killed in a shootout with police at an Evanston IHOP.
The student was the first victim of Jason Nightengale, 32, of Chicago, who went on to kill at least two others, police said.
The 30-year-old student was in a parking garage about 1:50 p.m. in the 5300 block of South East End Avenue when Nightengale opened fire, striking him in the head, police said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office hasn’t released his identity.
"We don't have a crystal ball where he goes next. Nor did we have this on any of our pod cameras. We are responding to the scene as these crimes are happening, getting information. And again, he's going to the next while we're trying to keep up with what's happened previously," Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said.

The University of Chicago on Sunday identified that man as Yiran Fan, a PhD student from China in a joint program of the Booth School of Business and the Kenneth C. Griffin Department of Economics. His family in China has been notified, according to the school.
“This is deeply painful news for the university community and our South Side neighborhood,” university officials said in a statement. “The University will provide support for members of our community affected by this incident.”
The University of Chicago Police Department has increased its presence in the area.
Hours earlier, a woman was killed and another wounded in a shooting about a block away.
