CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Five students at Uplift Community High School in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood were hospitalized Wednesday afternoon after ingesting marijuana gummies, officials with Chicago Fire Department said.

Officials said it happened at about 2:30 p.m., and all of the teenagers were transported to Weiss Hospital and Lurie Children’s Hospital.

A CFD spokesperson wrote that all students will recover from what they described as a marijuana overdose.

The fire department wrote that the gummies came from a dispensary.

Earlier this year, researchers at Southern Illinois University released a national study showing a sharp increase in the number of younger children eating marijuana products.

Although the study focused on children under the age of 6, one of the researchers, Dr. Marit Tweet, said about one-quarter of children who at marijuana-based products ingested enough to require hospital treatment.
