(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Northwestern University will have the largest biomedical research center in the world, thanks to a $121 million donation.

The gift, from Trustee Kimberly Querrey and her late husband Louis Simpson, will help build a 19-story tower that will make it the world’s largest academic research facility in that discipline.

Specifically, the donation will cover the cost of adding 15 floors of lab space to the Streeterville research center, which already bears their name.

Querrey said she and Simpson often talked about the importance of improving quality of life, especially for people with medical challenges.

In addition to contributions to the Feinberg School of Medicine, Querrey and the Simpson Trust are donating $10 million to executive education at the Kellogg School of Management.

The couple’s total donations to Northwestern have now reached $379 million dollars.

Simpson was President and CEO of Geico’s investment portfolio for 17 years. He died in January 2022 at age 85.
