MCHENRY COUNTY, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A northwest suburban veterans group is concerned about public perceptions after its post hosted a show that included a founder of the Proud Boys-an organization that has been labeled a hate group.

Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes was among those who appeared recently at VFW Post 4600 in McHenry. According to the Northwest Herald, the post’s commander Ben Keefe said in a statement that leadership did not realize until well into the show that some of the performers included people "who have been known for conduct which does not align with the views of our organization”.

The post said it opposes discrimination of any kind. The Proud Boys have been labeled a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center and some of its members were implicated in the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol building.
