CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - There was a vigil Tuesday night at the Calumet District police station for Aréanah Preston, the 24-year-old police officer who was shot to death early Saturday morning as she was going home from work.
Aréanah Preston’s mother thanked officers and everyone else among the hundreds who gathered at the station on 111th Street.
"I'm going to be alright, and I got this big old police family behind me," she said.
Calumet District Police Commander Tyrone Pendarvis told CBS-2, Preston was always positive.
"She always wanted to be an officer," Pendarvis said. "She loved helping people, and she loved being able to talk people down."
Earlier, there was a procession from the Medical Examiner’s Office to a funeral home in Oak Lawn.
Police have suspects in custody. They have not yet been charged.
