
NAPERVILLE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Naperville Police Department has released mid-year crime stats.
The stats, covering the first six months of the year, show no homicides.
There were 46 burglaries, compared to 60 in the same time period last year.
There were 23 auto thefts, 24 happened last year. The majority were vehicles that were left unlocked.
There was a significant increase in drug overdoses, a total of 54 compared to 22 last year. Most involved prescription drugs. Six of them were fatal.
Incidents involving firearms were down slightly.
Another category that saw a significant increase was extortion or blackmail. There were 14 such incidents compared to two last year.
Most were cases involving teenage boys sending inappropriate photos to someone who then threatened to release them publicly unless payment is made.
There were 11 reported sexual assaults. There were 23 last year.
Mental health incidents were about the same.
