WAUKEGAN, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The head of a north suburban teachers union says some students are having a hard time adjusting back to in person learning.
Andy Friedlieb is the co-president of the teachers union in Waukegan School District 60. During Tuesday's school board meeting he said the union has noticed several problems as students return to in person learning.
He said teachers are breaking up an increasing number of fights and that staff is getting mixed messages from administrators on how to effectively enforce the statewide mask mandate.
“We have tried to allow age-appropriate transition time to learn the new school rules”, Friedlieb stated. “We have been experiencing issues with mask compliance and students becoming verbally confrontational when directed to wear their mask.”
Regarding the number of increased fights, school officials said that it's a result of students being back together in an in-person setting after such a long gap and that they are currently working on effective de-escalation techniques
There has also been a jump in the number of students who are tardy, according to teachers.
“We’re finding it disruptive to the learning environment. We’re also concerned that students that are tardy are most likely to be unsupervised,” Friedlieb said.
Friedlieb said that these issues have been brought before the administration, but teachers have yet to see any resolution for some of them.
