A store clerk was shot to death during an attempted robbery in West Ridge Monday night.

Salim Khamo, 66, was working behind the counter of J&K Food and Liquors on Western near Rosemont Avenue when he was approached by a gunman who demanded money from the register, Chicago police said.

Khamo refused to comply and was shot in the chest, officials said. The man had a gun and returned fire but missed, police said.

Khamo was taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was pronounced dead, police said. His name hasn’t been released.

The suspect rode a bike to the store and fled on foot after firing shots, police said.

No one was in custody.
