(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — With autumn right around the corner, the Illinois’ Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) has released an interactive map for fall foliage hunters: the 2022 Fall Colors Trip Planner.

The online guide will provide weekly fall color reports, highlight fall activities across the state, and suggest regional road trip itineraries.

“Fall in Illinois is magical, with beautiful leaves, spooky sites and the perfect sweater weather,” said Sylvia Garcia, Director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

According to the trip planner, the best time to hunt for turning leaves in northern Illinois is during the second week of October; in central Illinois the best time is in mid-October; and in the southern part of the state, the guide recommends waiting until the last week of October.

“Each region of Illinois offers breathtaking fall scenery, and our state parks … will be bursting with changing colors in the weeks to come,” said IDNR Director Colleen Callahan.

The Illinois Office of Tourism collaborated with IDNR to create its fall colors trip planner, which features a list of sites and attractions folks can visit as they enjoy the state’s foliage.

For those looking to enjoy the colors near Chicago, the state has put together a “Spellbound in the Suburbs” itinerary. It suggests visiting Bengston’s Pumpkin Farm in Homer Glen, Richardson Adventure Farm in Spring Grove, or the Morton Arboretum in Lisle.

In addition, travelers will be able to share their fall color photos all season long using #EnjoyIllinois.

Some of the photos will be featured on enjoyillinois.com.
