Will masks still be around when Chicago fully reopens?

Face mask

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Lori Lightfoot said her goal is to have the City of Chicago fully open for business and closer to resembling normal life by July 4; but she suggested face masks might be here to stay for a while.

Mayor Lightfoot said if people keep getting vaccinated and the city steps up efforts to increase vaccinations in the most vulnerable areas, Chicago could be fully open by Independence Day.

A reporter asked her Tuesday at a new conference if that means people will be maskless; and the Mayor replied that many people may choose to keep wearing masks as we move forward.

"We've seen from experience of Asian countries, for example, that have had successive crises around public health. Now, it's standard fare for people to wear masks. I think that's going to be something we see here in the U.S. for probably at least the next year, if not further beyond that," Lightfoot said.

Mayor Lightfoot spoke Tuesday after announcing the 2021 Chicago Auto Show will be back at McCormick Place in mid-July.
