(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — If Saturday’s summer-like weather persuaded you to buy outdoor plants and flowers, the overnight freeze warning means you’ll need to cover them up.

Like many homeowners who started early with their spring planting, staffers at the Chicago Botanic Garden are protecting sensitive plants like Osmanthus and cytisus, says Director of Horticulture Tim Johnson.

He said bulbs and perennials that are flowering on their own – such as daffodils, hellebores and tulips – should be fine. But one that’s more susceptible to frost is magnolias.

Johnson warned using plastic to cover tender plants may smother them in the sunlight.  He suggests boxes or blankets with stakes to support them.
