CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A young mother has died after she and three other people, including her toddler, were shot Wednesday in Auburn Gresham.

The woman was standing on the sidewalk near 81st and Racine with her 2-year-old son, the boy’s father and another man when, police said, multiple people shot at them from a black car. It was in the middle of the afternoon, about 3:15 p.m., and the 23-year-old woman was hit multiple times and died at the hospital.

Chief of Patrol Brian McDermott said the department will do everything it can to find those responsible and hold them accountable.

“All acts of violence are difficult to deal with, but it’s especially difficult when there’s a child involved. Thankfully, this child is going to be ok, but I’d like to emphasize that acts of violence such as this will not be tolerated in the City of Chicago,” McDermott said.

Police said the 2-year-old and his 29-year-old father were in good condition with gunshot wounds to the feet and the 62-year-old man was stabilized after being shot in the back.

Detectives recovered the vehicle used and believe the shooting was targeted, McDermott said.

The Rev. Michael Pfleger, pastor at St. Sabina Catholic Church in Auburn Gresham, told reporters the shooters “had no heart or conscience.”

“When you aim at a mother and a 2-year-old child and a man sitting there, you have no conscience,” Pfleger said.

Pfleger says he sees the family “sitting outside often when he drives down the street.”
