JOLIET (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Joliet police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a woman shot to death inside a car, along with a toddler uninjured in the backseat.

Police said officers responded overnight Sunday, a little after midnight, to an alley near Clement and Ingalls after a parking complaint was made. There, officers found a car with a 24-year-old woman in the front seat with apparent gunshot wounds. A 2-year-old girl was also discovered in the vehicle. She was in the backseat, unharmed, police said.

The woman was shortly thereafter pronounced dead by a member of the Will County Coroner’s Office, while detectives and evidence technicians completed an investigative canvas of the scene. Police said the toddler found in the vehicle was evaluated at Ascension St. Joseph Medical Center as a precaution and was released to the custody of other other family members.

The woman’s identification is pending an autopsy conducted by the Will County Coroner’s Office.

Joliet police stress the investigation is in its early stages and anyone with information related to the incident are encouraged to to contact the Joliet Police Department Investigation Unit, 815-724-3020.
