CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Investigators are looking into the cause of a fire in which a woman was found dead along with two pets Tuesday morning in the Albany Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side.
Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said there were several calls to 911 around 9:30 a.m. about the fire in the 4400 block of North Lawndale Avenue. He said firefighters arrived at the three-story courtyard-style apartment building four minutes later.
Crews put out the fire and found the woman unresponsive in her bed, Chicago police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
"They were able to find her quickly, as soon as they got a hose line up to the third floor and knocked the fire down. They found her right away but she was already deceased," Langford said.
The 44-year-old woman's cat and dog also died in the fire, according to CFD, who said there were working smoke detectors in the hallway, but none in the apartment.
Police said the fire was contained to one unit.
The fire was called in by someone who saw smoke coming from building, police said.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office hasn’t released details on the fatality.
