CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- There was a community meeting involving the city and neighbors of the former Wadsworth Elementary School, later University of Chicago Charter School, at 64th and South University Avenue.
After denials that the school was being rehabbed for use as a shelter for migrants, the city finally admitted it’s true.
Matthew Doughtie, with the Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications said shelters housing migrants are out of space.
"We're really stretching the limits of what they can handle right now," he said.
CPS had said the work being done, at a cost of $1.5 million dollars, was routine maintenance, according to CBS 2.
Nearby residents are angry about the project, CBS 2 reports. They don’t want the migrants moving in.
"What exact vetting process is being done?" one resident said. "There are other places that you guys could've done this with," another said.
About 150 migrants are expected to move in as soon as the end of next week.
