(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Chicago Police officer who was shot and wounded this summer while trying to break up a bar fight has now returned home after undergoing therapy at Shirley Ryan Ability Lab.

Dozens of police vehicles on Friday took part in a two-hour procession to escort Officer Danny Golden to his Southwest Side home. His supporters lined up along 103rd near Pulaski to show their support.

Golden was paralyzed in the shooting. But Golden’s father, Patrick, tells WBBM Newsradio that his son will now work five hours a day for five days a week toward the goal of walking down the aisle with his fiancé in October 2023.

“You can’t let things get you down,” the father said. “Some things are out of your control, and he is adapting, and he’s learning how to do this. He’s going to get through it. He’s going to learn how to live a new life, a new chapter of his life.

“He’ll get through it, he will. It’s just going to take time, and there’s going to be good times and I know there’s going to be bad times. Ups and downs, but I think there will be more ups than downs.”
