(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - One highlight for this year's annual Memorial Day weekend Soldier Field 10 run will be the participation of a team of runners from Ukraine.

Up to 25 war-wounded Ukrainian military veterans will be running in this year’s Soldier Field 10, which benefits Rush University Medical Center’s program for U.S. veterans and their families who have been afflicted by war related trauma.

Injured in the now 8-year span of active conflict with Russia and treated in the United States, the organizer of team “Run for Ukraine”, Lev Holubec, said Ukrainian soldiers already have a deep connection with America.

“The fact of the matter is that the U.S. Military has been cooperating with the Ukrainian Military for a number of years. A lot of Ukraine’s defense and resistance is credit to training that they were able to gather working with U.S. Military personnel,” Holubec noted.

Holubec hopes that in addition to the participation of Ukrainian Military veterans and U.S. Armed Forces veterans of Ukrainian heritage, he would like to get an additional 250 community members on the team in order to raise money for the broader purpose of wounded U.S. veterans and Gold Star family care.

Registration for the May 28 10 mile and 10K run is now open through the SoldierField10 website.
