According to a new report, former President Donald Trump, who was reportedly frustrated with former Vice President Mike Pence, complained about Pence being taken to safety while rioters stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
He felt so strongly that during an account provided to the House committee investigating the events of Jan. 6, former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows reportedly said that Trump reacted positively to the crowd's chants that Pence should be hung, according to The New York Times.
The comments were reportedly in reference to Trump's displeasure with Pence for failing to somehow help him be declared the presidential winner despite not winning enough votes.
Was he joking, as Trump has repeatedly claimed about other blockbuster accusations? Meadows did not indicate the tone. Still, it does show the relationship splinter that the former president has had with his former running mate and vice president, which observers date back to the Capitol riots.
The House committee is attempting to develop a timeline of what the president was doing while his supporters stormed the nation’s Capitol, hanging from stairway bannisters, attacking police, violating congressional offices and defecating in the hallways. The comments have been confirmed by at least one witness, according to people briefed on their work, the Times reported.
A former aide for Meadows, Cassidy Hutchinson, confirmed that Trump made the remarks, the Times reported.
On the other side, a spokesman for Trump, Taylor Budowich, told the Times that the information is not credible.
“This partisan committee’s vague ‘leaks,’ anonymous testimony and willingness to alter evidence proves it’s just an extension of the Democrat smear campaign that has been exposed time and time again for being fabricated and dishonest,” he said. “Americans are tired of the Democrat lies and the charades, but, sadly, it’s the only thing they have to offer.”
