Former President Donald Trump made a bold claim during a new interview on Fox News, saying he could quickly end the conflict between Ukraine and Russia if given a second term in the White House in 2024.
“If it’s not solved, I will have it solved in 24 hours with Zelensky and with Putin,” Trump told Sean Hannity.
The war that was touched off by Russia’s invasion of its neighboring country recently crossed the one-year threshold, with Russian President Vladimir Putin increasingly escalating his attempts to retake territory that was once part of the Soviet Union.
Most recently Putin announced plans to place tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus. Ukraine called the plan “nuclear blackmail,” and it was swiftly condemned by both the U.S. and NATO.
But Trump believes he’d have little trouble ending the conflict altogether.
“And there’s a very easy negotiation to take place. But I don’t want to tell you what it is because then I can’t use that negotiation. It’ll never work,” Trump said. “But it’s a very easy negotiation to take place. I will have it solved within one day, a peace between them. Now that’s a year and a half. That’s a long time. I can’t imagine something not happening.”
“So you’d prefer if you were president, you think you would have a negotiated settlement?” Hannity asked Trump.
“Within 24 hours,” the former president replied.
Despite Trump’s assertions of his foreign affairs prowess, his 2024 re-election bid already faces a number of hurdles, including three separate possible criminal indictments and stiff competition in the polls for the Republican nomination from a potential campaign by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
