NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A pair of NYPD horses, named Freedom and Sampson, were seen running through the streets of New York City after breaking loose Thursday afternoon.

Police told WCBS 880 that two NYPD officers assigned to the Mounted Unit were on routine patrol in Midwood, Brooklyn around 12 p.m. when one of the officers suffered a minor medical episode as they were riding near East 8th Street and Quentin Road.

The officers dismounted and called for EMS to respond.

When EMS arrived on the scene, it appears the horses were startled, broke free and took off running down Ocean Parkway.

Police said one of the horses stepped on the other officer's foot as the animal made its escape.

Wild video posted to Twitter showed the horses trotting through the streets with an officer running after them trying to catch up.

The NYPD's Emergency Service Unit was called in to help corral the animals and the horses were picked up near Abraham Lincoln High School, a couple of miles away from where they got loose.

The horses were placed inside a mobile transport carrier and returned to the NYPD's Mounted Unit.

They did not suffer any injuries.

Both officers were taken to NYU Langone in stable condition and are expected to be okay.
